Social Interest Solutions Releases Infographic Highlighting ACA Consumer Enrollment Decisions
Social Interest Solutions (SIS) has released the sixth installment of its ACA Spotlight infographic series, Consumers’ Enrollment Patterns in the ACA Marketplaces. The infographic provides a snapshot of consumers’ enrollment choices in Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplaces across the U.S. during the most recent open enrollment period from November 1, 2015 – January 31, 2016. The information highlights consumers’ enrollment choices by plan category, age, and financial assistance for federally facilitated and state-based marketplaces.
“This Spotlight provides a tool to better understand characteristics of those enrolled in the ACA marketplaces and where there are similarities or differences in enrollment patterns among the 50 states,” said Terri Shaw, Vice President of Policy from SIS. “Enrollment patterns may confirm expected trends, help explain the impact of a state’s decision to or not to expand Medicaid, or help identify opportunities for outreach and education.”
Using the Consumers’ Enrollment Patterns in the ACA Marketplaces’ infographic, the data shows:
- The majority of individuals who enroll in the marketplaces qualify and receive financial assistance. For example, at least 75% of those enrolled in a silver plan across all states receive financial assistance.
- The age distribution of marketplace enrollees is not uniform across the states. For instance, 40% of those enrolled in a silver plan in West Virginia are between the ages 55-64 but in Utah’s marketplace, only 15% are between the ages 55-64.
- Young adults (individuals between the ages 18-24) make up only 6 to 14% of total enrollment in bronze or silver plans across all states, but the majority of enrollees in this age range chose a bronze or silver plan. Less than 10% of marketplace enrollees between the ages of 18-24 chose a catastrophic plan.
